And all you have to do is Join the Brooks Run Happy Group, keep up your regular exercise routine, and log your workouts in your Sweat365 Journal.
Not only can exercise help you maintain a healthier weight, increase your life expectancy, reduce the risk of serious aliments; but it also helps you maintain a happier attitude, and on Sweat365, helps you build your relationships with other people who like you are living an active lifestyle.
Maybe you’re training for your first half marathon, or marathon. Maybe you’re training to qualify for the Boston Marathon, or maybe your goal is to finish your first 5K. Maybe you’ve decided to take on a triathlon, or maybe you’re training for an Ironman. Maybe you just exercise for you, for your own personal goals. Whether you’re new to fitness or have been active for years, having goals, a support group, and a result to focus on can make a huge difference in achieving your goals. And getting a little free bling for your efforts never hurts!

miaharney says:
Is this going to be tracked by what we post on our blog?

Brad Hefta-Gaub says:
@GK17 - We have to assume people will be honest in tracking their workouts. What fun would it be if you cheated and won?
@Mia - YES! Just keep blogging/logging your workouts. But you need to sign up to the groups!

Brad–how do I sign up for the groups when I already have a blog? The page I’m getting is to set up a new blog which I don’t want to do. So confused! Thanks!

Thanks!

what about the injuries that could be caused by overly competitive people? i, for one, will immediately start logging 200+ mile weeks. are you liable for such injuries? my lawyer wants to know, for some reason . . .

As the giveaway is only going to apply to a certain group of people (many of us will not be in the category of those training for raises and running/biking/swimming a gazillion miles a week, I have an idea for the any future promotions: Provide a prize based on members setting specific goals in advance and meeting them. That way goal formulation and attainment is incentivizing the terrific fitness behavior and the motivation is to attain one’s goals (and helps some of the lesser mortals who are working towards fitness goals participate).
To achieve a winner, have a random drawing among those that completed their goals. I did this with some success at one of my employer. Self Magazine used to do this terrific 3 month fitness plan each March (I don’t know if they still do). Those who completed the program each month got their name in the hat. We gave out $$’s, and they were enough to make a difference.

I like Leisa’s idea.. because I am already totally discouraged by the amazing ironmen and cross country college kids that have wiped me off the leaderboards.

Meredith from Brooks says:
Hi everyone!
This is Meredith from Brooks. So glad to see that folks are getting into the challenges. We’ve had a lot of fun working with Brad at Sweat365 to put this together, and we’re excited to make it even better.
Leisa/shebaduhkitty: Thanks for the feedback and ideas! We love the idea of broadening the challenges so more people have a shot at winning. As a former Ironman-now-pregnant-person-on crutches I know firsthand that fitness goals vary a lot by person and by stage of life.
Right now my goal is to walk again unaided!
We’re not yet set up to reward people’s progress towards their own goals…but for now we’ll keep it simple and throw in some random prizes that any participant can win. First up will be a Nightlife Hat (http://www.brooksrunning.com/prod.php?p=280020&k=82116) for anybody that tracks any workout from yesterday (Nov 10) thru this Sunday Nov 16.
We’ll be posting a more detailed PRIZES page here very soon which will include the nitty gritty details on all the prizes…but for now, go post a workout so you have a chance of winning that hat! I have one and it’s pretty cool.
Thanks again and keep the thoughts (and workouts) coming!
Meredith

Brad Hefta-Gaub says:
Yes, there will be a December challenge, same as November. We will be adding all members of the RunHappy group to the challenge automatically!
Coming soon.

I really hate to say it (or even think it), but I can’t help but wonder about some of these brand new people who just signed up and have insane hours already….but no (or very few) publicly viewable workouts? Like I said…I hate to even think like that, but it seems there should be some form of public accountability? What do you think?
December 4th, 2008 11:58 pm
Brad Hefta-Gaub says:
Well Moe, I think this is a case were some people feel more comfortable using the Journal feature without clicking the “publish” button… I know that you’ve used this feature before.
If anything I suspect this is a case of our “user interface could be clearer”.

I have to wonder too, Moe. The calorie leader has burned 8,000 calories in 4 days? That seems a little hard to believe. Go to his blog and I’m not sure his year to date activities could even burn 8,000 calories. Don’t those include private logs? Maybe not.
If it is all kosher, I’m jealous that someone could do essentially the equivalent of running 15-20 miles a day for 4 days in a row.

Moe says:
Thanks Brad! I felt really bad after posting that comment….perhaps you can delete?
I think the challenge is great and it seems is really motivating some people! Thanks for setting all of that up! And excellent work to all you crazies out there who are logging more than 2-3 hrs/day! WOW!

Brad Hefta-Gaub says:
horsefly…
You can see their workouts if you go to their blog, and go to their Logbook page. You can change report options and see what types of activities they did. The idea that someone might burn 8,000 calories in 4 days doesn’t sound too far off, but you’re right, that’s a lot of exercise.
This is one reason why Brooks also decided to do random prizes.
Our goal is for everyone to have fun and motivate each other to live healthy fitness lifestyles.
