Definitely! Intervals are great in between your longer runs. try heating that calf up about 30 minutes before you run, then after it's warmed up stretch it out. I did the same thing last year and it worked out that pain fairly quickly. Good luck!

bet it's nothing that a new release wont fix.

noticed page formatting (borders of boxes looking funky/jaggy), edit buttons absent, nonreactions to mouse clicks, & slow loading (server prolly). "Add activity" lacks the formatting buttons that present in firefox. I think the mouse issues were while using activity add. ...now that I opened my fat mouth, I cannot reproduce the nonclicking buttons on this higher-spec desktop machine.

overall chrome is just SO MUCH FASTER. cool that you are using it to develop 365 1.1

I used to have this problem when I started running. I had a really embarassing accident after eating a banana. I have since decided not to eat them prior to running. I also found that I have a cup of coffee about an hour before I run that I am able to "clear the pipes" so to speak before I run. That proved to be extremely helpful. Though, it became a topic of humor among my son and husband. :)

Hi! I'm running in my second 5K in October. I've been having calf pain now for a couple of weeks, and trying to run has been frustrating. I started doing interval training awhile back and loved it, but stopped when I started training for this 5K. Do you think that I could interval train for the 5K?? Maybe like 30 minutes, and alternate a minute of sprinting and a minute and a half of walking? I'm still new to this whole running thing!

What I would do in a case like this is to pick a half marathon training plan, and do the last 4 weeks of that plan.

The idea is that the training you did for your 20K can be thought of as the ramp up to the 4th to last week of your half marathon plan. So you pick up from there.

Does that make sense?

Hi it me again, I just finished my race this past weekend, it was great. I used Hal Higdons training guide. My stategy for the race was to run the whole way but starting with the 2nd water station I walked through them (10-15 seconds)I also took a cliff bar with me and every other water station I would take one bite. I never had an upset stomach from doing this and it really helped to keep my energy up. Good luck on your race, you CAN do this.

I just ran my first 20K yesturday, very comfortably, 2 hrs. 24 sec. It was a flat course. I am also planning on running a half marathon on Oct. 5, but a hilly course, not flat like the 20K. I do not know what distances I should run on the weekends (4 weekends total) in between now and then. I have some hilly routes mapped out. They are 8, 10, or 12.5 mile routes. Any advice is helpful.

Congrats! I'm about to run my first (race ever) 5K in Nov, and so excited! All the experts say not to add more than 10% per week. For me, I started training with 1-2 mile runs, twice per week. Then I upped the mileage to 3 miles, which I'm just getting comfortable with. Everyone says that you should be able to run further than the race you're planning on doing (ex, be able to run 3.5 miles for a 3 mile race). Once I get up to 3.5 miles, I may start adding smaller runs every week.

Just don't overdo it- that's the easiest way to get hurt. Finding a coach would be great. See if you can talk a friend into training with you. It helps, even if they're across town on their run at the same time. :) GOOD LUCK! AND HAVE FUN!

I do much more trail running than road running--though hunting season makes that a little dangerous thus confined to Sundays!. I've always used the top end New Balance trail shoes. I need to get another pair, and it will likely be the WT1110GT. I use and have enjoyed NB because it is one of the few manufacturers that offers a wide size, which I need. So, I don't have lots of other mft's experience. Here's a link to a review from last year for trail running shoes: http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-240-400--11601-0,00.html

The trail behind my home is very tough. Rough terrain and very hilly--with some water too! The NB shoe has always given me the right amount of traction and foot support combined with the flexibility needed to run comfortably. The gore-tex feature on the NB is of great interest to me.

Congratulations! I'd love to do one of these. Have a great time with it!

My race was only about 8 hours, but without a team it was 8 straight hours. So not insignificant.

Friends who've been riding much longer than me seem to be able to stomach a much wider variety of food on the bike than I can deal with. My tummy rejects a whole lot of stuff when I'm working hard. I'd suggest as much on-bike-fueling as possible leading up to the race, so you can try a number of fuels.

What worked best for me was liquid fuel (perpetuum), lots of Nuun in my water (it was pretty warm), Clif Blocks, and pre-cut bits of Lara bars (mostly ground up dates and nuts)... a little at a time. I tried small pieces of PB&J, but my body rejected even the smallest amounts (instant giant bloating).

I have tried pilates and haven't liked it. I enjoy more yoga than anything, but a yoga that is a bit more intense and like a cardio session with long holds on strengthening poses (I just need to do it more!). I guess that's similar to pilates, but I just am not a pilates lover at the moment :) Thanks for the suggestion, maybe I'll take out a tape from the library and try it once again...

Thanks for everyone's suggestions! Brad, you're right... I am not looking to be a faster runner, therefore I believe I'd benefit from lifting continually.

Since I've battled similar IT band type injuries/Runners knee, I don't want to leave lifting by the wayside either and just run. I think I will look to lift 2 days a week and just concentrate on muscle group exercises, instead of concentrated lifting for now and see if that keeps my knee in good shape.

Bulking/building a lot of muscle is no longer my goal, but I just want to have a healthy running life without injury and also be able to have some visible muscle bouncing around too.

Thanks again, I feel better about moving my lifting to two days a week for now. :)

I'm a runner and I do strength training. I'm training right now for a half marathon and my schedule is:
Sun: long run; Mon: easy run; Tues: strength training; Wed: easy run; Thurs: tempo or intervals; Fri: easy; Sat: strength training.

When I'm not training, I substitute my Thurs run for a strength day. I don't "lift" hardcore per se, so I'm typically focusing on my core and doing a circuit workout. I do not focus much on legs (more on that in a minute) because I don't want to over work them (running plus doing leg specific weights). I however do specific leg exercises to strengthen my hips and to stretch/strengthen my IT band. I battled an IT injury about 18 months ago and, like you, also found the strength training helps keep that under control.

I think I answered most of your questions. I do find that I focus my weights more on the upper body. I've realized that it helps my running, especially on the longer distances. The core exercises help keep my overall running form "proper" and the arm/shoulder exercises actually help keep my stride even (keeping my arm swings rhythmic).

I hope that helps. I like working out 7 days a week. If you're not looking to build bulk, you could easily move to a schedule of 4 days a week running and 2 of strength and still get the benefit.

THE best way to get the right shoe is to go to a store like Road Runner Sports.
They have you stand barefoot on a pad that computes your weight distribution and how high your arch is. Then they video you running on a treadmill to show pronation and how much you involve your Achilles Tendon in the stride.
They then base what they shoes they show you on the results and how much mileage and type of running you do.
Their recommendation has given me a shoe that feels perfect for me.

I had bought some trail shoes that were supposed to be good before I went there and found out they were totally wrong for me! They were killing my feet!
Hope this helps. Sorry I didn't see your post sooner.

Kate,

I think an important question to ask is, what is your goal? I think that if one has a goal of being a faster runner, then they probably shouldn't be doing any significant "traditional" weight training. They'd probably be better off doing something like pilates, where they will "get lean" and that will result in a muscular physique, but they won't get large muscles.

I don't think being a faster runner is your goal... so my comment isn't intended to suggest that you are doing something you shouldn't be... by all means, you should do the exercise routine that makes you happy and helps you reach your goal.

If your goal is to get "bigger" muscles... then... well... running may actually be counter productive to that goal.

Anyway, I know I didn't really answer your question... just adding a perspective on mixing these two different disciplines.

I am a runner and I lift. I also do a martial arts/bodyweight workout once a week.
I lift Mon and Wed.
I run Tue, Thur, and Sun.
I do my MA/BW on Sat.
Friday I have off, but if I feel too tired I take ANY day off.
I have left my legs off my weight training. I have a repaired ACL and when I tried to incorparate legs again with so much mileage, they didn't like it. I also work them hard on Saturday.
So I split the lifting upper body between push and pull.
Check out my posts for more info.

I am trying to figure out a good schedule for my workouts so I can stick with lifting regularly and incorporating more running miles into my workouts. Sounds simple, right? Somehow I can't seem to get my body to do both or mentally focus on both, but instead I end up doing one or the other great, leaving the opposite by the wayside.

It's easy to lift on days when I have short runs scheduled from 2-4 miles, but above mileage that I don't want to lift and run longer on those same days.

I also don't want to exercise 7 days a week, but want to allow myself time to lift, run and practice yoga (60 minutes) or go for a bike ride and still have a day off during the week. My schedule is running 3-4 days a week as it stands.

I've also found that my past knee injuries were due to the fact that I wasn't strengthening my legs enough. I've been known to focus on running and leave behind weights, or do the opposite. I'm still trying to get myself to do both at the same time.

I found this summer, when I turned 100% to lifting and minimal running that my knee has gotten stronger and I am able to run finally without pain. I want to run longer and further, but I don't want to sacrifice strength training to do so (hence returning knee pain), as I have in the past.

My question to you is...

As a runner, do you strength train?

If so:
how often? (3x a week, etc...)

when (on separate days than running or same day)?

do you lift just major muscle groups (squats/lunges)?

do you do full-body strengthening or split routines?

do you concentrate on lower body more than upper?

If not, why not? Just curious.

Brad Hefta-Gaub on "Comments - How To Reply?"

There are three ways to reply, which people choose to use:

1) Comment on your own blog in reply to the comment. - This is good if the comment is related to the topic of the blog post.

2) Send an email reply. - This is good if the comment is more personal. You get the email of the people who commented in your "There was a comment on your blog" notification.

3) Go to the persons blog and comment on their most recent post (what Dave said) - This is similar to 2.

Things we plan to build, which we think will make this 2-way communication easier.

A) A page in your dashboard showing comments made to blog posts that you made comments on. That way, if the person chooses to "reply to you" using option 1 above, you'll see it in your dashboard. This still assumes that the person you're trying to reply to goes to that page on their dashboard.

B) An email notification to you to all new comments to blog posts you commented on. Same as A, but it emails you when there is something new. Like A above, when I say "you" I mean the person who made the original post.

Are there other ideas you guys have for ways to make this easier?
