Wish I could run with ya!!! Alas...LA is too far from Austin. lol Have you tried Niketown? I know that Nike here in CA has running groups on various nights of the week...fairly small except for perhaps right before a Nike sponsored race. AND...they have all different pace groups from 7 minute miles up to like 12 or 13 minute miles...something for everyone.
Good luck!

I am getting back into jogging after almost a year off. Yes have put back on the weight I lost last year. And even more so, am ready to lose it again.

But, I have to confess, I need some motivation. Maybe a once a week jog with a small group here locally? Run-Tex doesn't really have a 'beginner' group that I feel comfy in. Those folks are all very very serious.

Thoughts??

Thanks!!

My suggestion is to get tri shorts. You can swim, bike, and run in them. I wore a sports bra and tri shorts for my whole race and was happy with my transition times. The shorts didn't hold much water and helped for the bike portion.

I also put socks on after the swim and kept them on through the run. I am not comfortable running without socks. My feet didn't blister as my feet weren't that much more wet than when I normally run so all was good. One other suggestion is to get a bucket and put water in it for the transition from the swim to the bike so you can dip your feet to get rid of excess gravel or rocks. I dipped my feet and then wiped them off with a towel and then put my socks on and it worked well. GOOD LUCK! I loved my first TRI!

I'm no expert, but I did finish my first tri last weekend... and I also stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night ;)
Q: Can I wear a swim suit and then throw shorts on after?
A: From your screenname I am guessing you are a woman. I'm not so I wore tri shorts to swim and bike and added running shorts for run. Women in my event were fairly evenly split between wetsuits, trisuits or tri shorts/swim tops, and swimsuits. All of those require a bit of a change in transition so swim in whatever you are comfortable swimming in that can easily go under bike/run gear.
Q; Can you use an IPod for the run and bike portions?
A: Check your event specific rules. Generally headphones are not allowed on bike and discouraged on run - longer events might be more likely to allow them.
Q: I seen alot of videos of tris and most people don't wear socks, is it normal to do this?
A: If you've never run w/o socks, the tri is a bad time to start. Seriously, I wore socks and figure it maybe added 5 seconds to my time max. If you were to ask me about flying/running bike to run transitions I'd give you the same advice.
Relative to transitions generally, lots of good advice on this site and at active.com. There are many things you can do to speed them up: get to event early to set up; clearly memorize where your stuff is (pace your # steps in to your stuff, clearly mark your spot, remember that you're bike will not be there to show you your spot in T2, etc); don't drink or snack in transition as your bike is a rolling buffet; bring a small towel to stand on for shoe changes; helmet and sunglasses upside down on handlebars; have goggles and swimcap off before you get there...

Remember...it is unlikely you are out to win in your first event so have fun! You'll love it.

Hey,
Just wanted to say that I really admire your ambition and drive! I am not overweight, but do have a movement disorder that limits my activity at times. I believe we all have limitations, but in time/training we can overcome them. Good luck to you and the only suggestions I have for you, only from my own experience (i ran a half marathon), is:
1)Do not be afraid to walk!
2)Do interval training on the treadmill. For example:
1 minute at a fast walk, 1 minute run, 1 minute cool down, 1 minute sprint. Repeat the sequence.

You will be amazed at how soon the intervals increase and you will be running longer with less walking time.

I'm so excited that I've found other people who are just beginning, like me! I would consider myself more of a walker than a runner at present, but I too am trying to change that. I'm giving myself about 8 weeks (more or less, depending on how well I keep to the schedule) to ramp up my jogging distance so that I can jump into the Beginner 5k training program that I found on this site. From there, onward and upward!

I think it's a good goal. When you start running you might try walking for 5 minutes and then jogging for 30 seconds and repeating to meet your time or mileage goal. As you feel more comfortable increase your jogging by 1/2 to 1 minute increments and decrease your walking in the same way. Just don't adjust both at the same time. Check out the running planet website. Right now I'm walking for 2 weeks before I start the 8-week program for beginning runners. I'm hoping to run the ING 1/2 in Atlanta on March 19th (I think that's the date). Anyway if you want to be training buddies I'm game. I have about 100 to lose total. I'm trying to lose 70 by the end of this year. Finally, I agree with the earlier comment if the marathon seems too much consider a half. Take care.....me

It is certainly possible to get where you want to be. How about staring with a half marathon at an earlier date? Sometimes setting shorter term goals first makes them seem more attainable and you are less likely to bail on it. I lost 75 lbs two years ago by walking alot! About 6 months ago, I started running. I ran my first 5k in June and have just committed to training for a half marathon in October. My longest run to date is 5.2 miles. There is a nice 12 week training schedule for half marathons on this site. It starts with 3-4 miles. I feel good at 5 miles. I have said that if my knees are dust at 10, I will bail. Running will yield high results on you weight loss and it will get easier on your body as you go. My run is October 19th, one day after my 36th birthday. I have said that my goal is to be a bad ass on my 36th birthday! It is such a great feeling!! Good luck to you and absolutely get your goals and go for it -- but set shorter term goals first so you can feel the high of hittin them before the big one!

On April 5th 2009, I will be running my first marathon in Dallas (or trying to at least). 26.2 miles! I have eight full months to train for it. I started walking at the gym I belong to a month ago and have recently felt the need to jog a bit as well. It feels good when I jog up to a point, and then it starts to feel like my knees are going to grind themselves into dust. I'm not in very good shape and I am significantly overweight, (about 60 pounds overweight to be honest). Should I just forget the marathon in April and give myself more time to train or is eight months enough? Anyone got any suggestions for me.

Robin,

Walking to running is a transition that can be made by run/walking. I recommend following this program (which will soon be in our library) and listening to your body. There may be times when you feel like running more or less. Ultimately, you are exercising for a certain amount of time. There is no right or wrong here. Do what feels right to you. If your goal is to run, then you will push past difficult times when you feel like walking.

Transitioning From Walking To Running

If you have been considering a running program, but don’t know where to start, now is the perfect time. The beginning of the year is a great time to get started with a new goal. The next 12 weeks will be devoted to making the transition from walking to running. By the end of the 12 weeks you will be able to run 5K and you’ll have improved your fitness.

Once you are able to comfortably walk three miles, 3-5 days a week, you can add a little jogging to your routine. Jogging may seem difficult at first, but the run/walk approach will train your body to quickly adapt to the demands of running.

Running is both convenient and inexpensive form of exercise. All you need is a good pair of running shoes. Specialty running stores will help you get the shoe that is right for you.

Week Walking/Jogging Pace	# Training Days	Time In Minutes
1 Moderate walking pace	3 30
(17-20 min/mile)

2 Moderate walking pace	4 30
(17-20 min/mile)

3 Fast walking pace 3 45
(13-16 min/mile)

4 Walk 4/Jog 2 4 30
(Repeat 5 times)

5 Walk 3/Jog 3 3 36
(Repeat 6 times)

6 Walk 2/Jog 4 4 36
(Repeat 6 times)

7 Jog 8/Walk 2 3 40
(Repeat 4 times)

8 Jog 10/Walk 2 4 36
(Repeat 3 times)

9 Jog 15/Walk 2 3 36
(Repeat 2 times)

10 Walk 5/Jog 20/Walk 5	3 30
(Repeat 4 times)

11 Walk 5/Jog 25/Walk 5	4 35
(Repeat 4 times)

12 Jog 30 3 30

Listen to your body, if you feel that you need to walk more and run a little less on a particular day, do it. Take the day off if you need to. Make sure to stretch after workouts to prevent injury and minimize muscle soreness. Drink plenty of water and have fun!

Let me know if you have any questions. Lisa@Sweat365.com

Up through week six of the "Couch-to-5k" program on the coolrunning site, the most it has you run at one time is 1/2 mile, or 5 minutes of straight running. Then, in week 7, it jumps to 2.5 miles, or 25 minutes of running. Doesn't that seem like a bit of an unmanageable jump?
I've found another one online that looks pretty good, but I'd love to weigh it against your personal favorites. Thanks for all the suggestions and encouragement.

I'm having trouble finding the "Couch potato to 5k" article in the library. Best I've been able to come up with so far is the Beginner 5k training program. But, this program assumes I can already run 2 miles at a time (or maybe I'm not understanding the chart correctly?) Can anyone give me a link to the Couch potato to 5k site, or any other site that can help me get started? Thanks for all the encouragement!

April 2009 is a long time for training, so I am sure that you can do it. Join in some local 5K events and after you see how easy 5K is gradually work to increase the distance to 10K. I ran my first 10K in 06/2008 after running 5K for years. It was great, because I had been running 6.33 track and 10 cross country mile distances every weekend. I am not out there for speed, just to prove to myself that I can go the distance.
