It really depends on what you are aiming to do. Do you want to race, do you want to run for fun, do you want to run a 5k, do you want to run a marathon? Your running goals will determine what you will do to get better. However, either way you will need to increase both distance and speed. This should be done gradually, though, so that you do not injure yourself. My advice, check out some online training plans. There are quite a few free, decent plans available online that can be tailored to your needs.

I'm just getting in to running.....I'm naturally in pretty good shape but I don't really know what to do now. To get better do you stay at the same speed but increase distance or increase speed and stay at the same distance????

Thanks in advance for any insight!!!

My main advice is to pay attention to your body. If it hurts, listen to it.

The thing I like to tell my non-runner friends that are getting started is when you are finished with a good run, take note of how you feel. Try to remember that feeling and use it for inspiration for getting out there again.

To echo Brad, pick a training plan and pick an event. I'd also recommend picking a few 5Ks or 10Ks to race in prior to your half.

Other than that, know that there will be good runs and bad runs and it's okay to have both! Be sure to pay attention to what (and when) you eat before your run and how it affects you.

Good Luck!

Welcome! And good luck!

First step, is to pick an event... since you're not yet running a mile, you will want to give yourself plenty of time to prepare. I think you'll want to give yourself 20 weeks or so... so if you pick an event in the fall/winter, you will have plenty of time. You might be able to do it sooner, but to be as safe as possible (and avoid injury) it's good to work your body into it.

Second step, is to pick a training plan... We have several training plans available in our library, and the beginner half marathon plan is designed for someone who already feels comfortable running 5miles... Don't worry, you'll get there. But to start out, you might want to start with a beginner 5K plan... it's 6 weeks long, 3 days a week, and get's you up to 3 miles. Then you could do a beginner 10K plan... and eventually work to the beginner half marathon plan.

There are other plans out there that take a "couch potato to half marathon" approach... and those are perfectly good plans... you just need to make sure you pay attention to your body and go slow.

You can do it!

Check out our library section for other great tips.

Also, I'm sure other people will reply with suggestions and ideas.

I have (reluctantly) decided to do a half marathon in November 2008. I HAVE NEVER EVER ran more than 1 mile without stopping. I am not in the best shape but not out of shape either. I am VERY nervous about this event and I am trying to find some good training tips. Any suggestions?

Hi Sweat365 SuperStars!
It's officially "tri-season"! My tri club just had our kickoff meeting! Yeah! This means almost every one of my (our) entries will be some sort of "brick".... When, oh when, will we be able to enter these gems-of-a-workout on one screen in one blog entry? (While still stracking the distance for swim, bike and/or run.)
Please! Please! Please!
Hugs & kisses,

Agreed... actually, we've been playing around with some stuff in the background to make this work flow easier. One thing we're considering doing is making a trimmed down user interface on the logbook page that let's you focus on adding just workout details quickly.

If there are any web developer/rest/ajax inclined members out there who are interested, drop us a line at support@sweat365.com and we can give you a sneak peak at a REST api that allows your to do bulk inserts today. We just don't have the UI built yet. ;)

suggestion: a way to add more than one workout at once (e.g. run to gym to lift & swim takes 3 separate entries). just a suggestion!

I hate to say this, but where is the race? I have not heard of it. Of course I live in the Eastern States. Is this race series every week or every month? Good luck if you are doing this series. We have a local series for the winter run by the local Athletic Club. It is every month from Dec.- March. You have the choice of running 5k or 10k and are scored by cross country scoring.
Best of luck for 2008.
