To be more specific the pain is near the top of the joint of the tarsals before the talus.
I'm kinda thinking lassie was right about the pressure on the vein in that area.
I've tried Nike's, and New Balances but the pain returns. I'm hoping that it might be a combination of tight/poorly tied laces and worn shoes.
Thanks for all the ideas! I think that I'll be staying away from the Mizunos now!

WOW! they are Mizunos too. Went to the running store to pick up my race packet and talked to them about my issues. They checked my shoes, laces, space .,etc told me that I my have to do trial and error for shoes for long runs. So I bought Brooks shoes. Too late for Sunday's half marathon but I will definitely check them out on longer runs.

I had the same problem with Mizunos. I wasn't very smart. I bought them twice, before I figured out it was the brand. Once I changed brands I was fine. They just didn't like my feet.

Have you tried a completely different model of shoe? I had a pair of Adidas that did that once...but my Asics are great. Also, try loosening the laces in the middle of the foot and pull them a little more snug at the top...might release the pressure over the midstep where the laces hit the most.

As for Lassie's shoe issue with the ball...glad that worked...the re-lacing. You may also want to try either a more cushioned shoe or perhaps an insert so that the ball of your foot has a bit of a pillow on contact when you run.

I had a problem with the ball of my foot hurting. It was suggested that it may be because my feet swell and the laces may be too tight. The girl at the store retied my laces and skipped the bottom crossover. It helped. Maybe try that but at the area you feel it hurts. I see that there is a vessel crossing the bone at the top of my foot, maybe it is the pressure on that that hurts you. Not sure what to do about that but good luck.

I have seen shoes laced "backwards", so that the laces that you tie are on the inside of the shoe. This might help.

I'll try a different shoe size... I was really hoping to find a way to work with my current shoes though.

I've changed how I tie the laces- tried a few ways. But after awhile the pain returns... Any particular way that might work?

It's only the inside top part that hurt, and only on one foot...

When is the last time that you had your feet measured, sometimes it is just the difference between a 7 & 7.5 that will make all of the difference in foot comfort. I have even seen running shoes that don't have laces.

exactly where does it hurt? 'near' where you tie the laces is spectacularly general. there are different ways to tie the laces, maybe you just haven't found the right one.

When running my shoe manages to hurt the top of my left foot-- near where you tie the laces. At points, I can't run. It feels like my foot is being pinched by something hard. I've tried tying the laces all different ways, different socks and moving the tongue of the shoe around but 1/2 a mile in it hurts. Also, I've tried two different pairs of shoes. I don't know what to do...

Any ideas?

If the store is NOT willing to take back/trade your shoes... think of finding a new store. Mine has said they will take back if at ANY time the shoes are not working out.

I will stop by the store and see what they say. They can always say no but I won't know until I try, right?

I went out running today and "listened to my toes" and after 3 miles it was more like the balls of my feet and the bottom of the end of my toes rather than the tips of them that throbbed.! Still will check out Hammer Toe too.

Lassie, even with 5 weeks and 70 miles on the shoes, I wouldn't be surprised if the store was willing to work with you. Especially if it's an independent running shoe store, focused on runners. They would love to make you a happy customer who will always come back to their store, so it's worth them to take a shoe back... But I guess there's a chance they won't be able to help you.

At the minimum I'm sure they'll help you find a better shoe.

Lassie, when you say you have a bunion on that foot the thought comes that you might also have the beginnings of "hammer toe". These bony deformities frequently go together. If the refitting of the shoe/silicone toe caps don't help you might need to talk to your physician for suggested exercises. You can find info on hammer toe on the net. Good luck.

Well, thanks guys. I will go to my store and see what they say, but I bought these about 5 weeks ago ( yet only ran under 70 miles) so not sure if they will entertain a switch. I have a bunion on that foot so needed the extra comfort. Maybe I went for comfort instead for running style. I may even check on the silicone caps.

I agree with Andrea, it sounds like maybe your shoes don't fit quite right. It's not uncommon for shoes to feel fine in the store, but once you get out and run further, your feet change a little and you feel them. I bet the store would love to help you find a better shoe for you. I encourage you to take them back and talk to them about what you're feeling... I'm sure they will be VERY helpful!

if your toes touch the front of the shoe, they might be too small even if they feel fine. your foot can slide a little forward during the footstrike and bang the front of the shoe. so it helps to have room up there but with the shoe snug enough in your forefoot so it only has minimal slide. the other typical cause is downhill running. toes just keep banging the front of the shoe on every step. any chance you're running a lot of downhills?
they sell little silicone toe caps. you could try those. i've seen them on the road runner sports website.

OK. It is at the tip of the toes and really only becomes noticeable nearer the end of the run and definitely when I stop running. That may have something to do with concentration on the run so I don't notice and then near the end I guess I start thinking of my body than the run. When I take my shoes off it is a relief. The tips of the toes are tender but never that bad that I could not wear closed toe shoes to work an hour later! I thought it was because those toes do not have as much "padding" as the big toe and wondered if there was something for the toes like Dr Scholls insoles are for feet!!!

Tell us more about how it hurts... does it hurt on the end of the toe? Or is it in the bones of the toe? Do they hurt when they flex? Does it only hurt WHEN you're running and stop immediately afterwards?

You could have any number of things causing this pain...
