I am not a triathlete, but I do shut it down to what I call active rest.
In the off-season I just find other activities to do, such as play tennis, bowling and even walking.

In-season I try start ahead of where I started last year.

This off-season I have been doing a lot of body weight stuff instead of lifting.
Things like step ups, hanging squat, RDL, hang cleans with just my body weight.

It allowed for me to keep my muscles active without the damage of lifting year round. I also found that my knees are doing better than before. I haven't had any knee problems or pain for a whole year. Which is good for still triple jumping and long jumping and playing tennis.

Now that fall is in full swing, and winter is rounding the corner. I am curious how various people approach off-season fitness?

Some people have told me I push my body too hard to long and don't take an appropriate break during the year. My year is basically divided as:

Running Focused: Sept-March
Cycling Focused: March-June
Triathlon Focused: June-Sept

During the winter last year I added a bunch of strength training, which was hard at first but after I got into the swing of it, I really enjoyed it... but I dropped that off around May and haven't picked it up again.

Do you divide up your seasons? If so how?
