My shin splints only occur when I haven't worked out in a long time. The next day my shin splints are on fire, and I have trouble with my mobility. You need to take it easy when these occur or you can cause serious injury to your lower legs.

When I played football in High School, I had a bad case of shin splints. It never seemed to get any better unless I rested for a few days. My Doctor told me that the more you strengthen your lower leg muscles, the less likely you are to get shin splints.

There is an exercise you can do for shin splints. Just walk on your heels with your toes up for 60 seconds. Then walk regular for 60 seconds, and repeat for 4 sets, three times a day. It strenghtens your anterior tibialas. When I have laid off from running, I have had to do this when I start again. It's always worked for me.

what kind of pain, where is it? is it pain the bone or in the muscle?

swimming is 100% ok . . . go as hard as you want. biking - if it's pain in your bone, then you'll want to either go easy or abandon biking completely. of course, if biking doesn't cause you any pain, go all you want at a moderate pace.

and then treatment options abound, depending on what is injured. if it's in the bone, i honestly wouldn't recommend icing because that decreases circulation, which is the opposite of what you want to do when healing bone. hot compresses is what you want (increasing blood flow) . . . but biking is better, in my opinion, cuz it also increases blood flow, raises temp AND gives you a workout . . . something that resting on the couch doesnt do.

I have been training for a triathlon for 5 weeks now and have had pain in my shins, both of them. From the previous forum and knowledge, i know to ice and rest. I was wondering if I could still bike and swim even though I should not run?
