WOW, great question and great feedback. I just purchased the P90X system but knew that I would need to modify the workouts based upon my goal of implementing it to increase my strength and core. The feedback here confirms what I was thinkig I would need to do . . stretch out the workouts so that I can continue with my regular training workouts.

Javalina93, Barfieldm & all, please provide any updates as to how you have progressed with it!

Thanks for all the feedback. I decided to postpone my p90x workout while I trained for a half marathon. I'm going to pick up p90x again here in the next week or 2 and will use your advice since I still plan on running although not quite as intense as I have been for the half. Thanks again!

I currently started p90x and am in the 4th week while still incorporating running in the plan. I ran about 30 miles a week before p90x, and was not about to lose the endurance that I had built up over the plan, so I simply cut back miles and adjusted my schedule.

If you want to run with p90x, be smart about it, I generally run about 4 days a week now, 3-4 miles a day. I do not run on plyometrics day, as that is a VERY intense workout in itself. I get more miles in on the easy yoga days generally, I try to get 5-6 miles in so that I can keep up my long distance endurance without going overboard.

Now if you do plan to do this, be prepared to really up the nutrition and supplements, I am a 120 pound female,and I need about 2000 MINIMUM calories a day with the intenser workouts, I usually get more than that, that is my minimum. I emphasize this because it is very intense on your body, your metabolism will rev itself on this type of double workout, and unless you are trying to lose weight, don't skimp on the nutrition. I would recommend a multivitamin and calcium for sure, and make sure you get enough iron, I have seen to many fellow runners suffer from anemia when their workouts get intense.

So in short, be careful, be smart, but you can totally incorporate running into your p90x workouts, I have actually felt much stronger with the increased muscle, and can run harder than I used to be able to. Also, don't feel defeated if you don't think your body can handle a run, take a day off. Just listen to your body and if it is super exhausted, either back off a little, or up the nutrition. Good luck!:)

P90X by itself is an @55 kicker. Like Brad mentioned, it really depends on what your goals are. I tried it for a couple weeks and found that above the time commitment needed to actually do the workouts, you also need to commit time for rest. I found myself needing more recovery time on P90X then I did on any other workout regime. So incorporating a running schedule was next to impossible.

I'm beginning a 20-week program for a half ironman and I'm dedicating 3 days a week to running - two speed days and one endurance day. For the two speed days, I'm contemplating dedicating one day to interval/tempo/hill running and one day to Plyo X. They both directly effect speed, so I think I'll try this out for the first phase of my program and hopefully I see improvement on the long runs.

My current goals is to progress as a triathlete, so I will only include those portions of P90X that will directly effect my goal. Plus, a once-a-week 45-minute session in the weight room can cut out:
* chest/back
* shoulders/arms
* legs/back
* chest/shoulders
* back/biceps

With all the speed training you'll be doing (if your goal is to run 4.5 miles in 30 minutes), you only need that one day in the gym. Your body will have no choice but to be ripped. Plus, it's always good to include ab ripper x no matter what your goals are. It's a 15-20 minute workout with great benefits.

Hope this helps.

I tried doing P90X and base training for triathlons at the same time. Let me tell you, it is tough! I never intended to do the full P90X 6 or 7-day per week plan as I knew there was no way, but rather I was doing 3x per week and just stretching the 1-week plan out over 2 weeks, and I completely skipped any of the cardio-type of workouts since I was already swimming, biking and running. I definitely felt like I was getting stronger, but as my triathlon training started to ramp up I couldn't keep it up. I dropped it to swim/bike/run full-time and will probably pick it up again at the start of the off season for some strength building.
It really is an awesome program!

I have never done P90X, let alone trying to do it while continuing to run. But based on the videos I've seen of the P90X program, it looks like it could be quite intense.

I think the question you should ask yourself is what is your goal?

If your goal is to keep running and achieve some short term running goal, then you might want to slow down the P90X a little. Keep doing it, but take it a little easier on the day of or before your runs.

If your goal is to workout and have fun and get lean and muscular, and you've been running because it's fun, but you also really enjoy P90X and the effects it's giving you. Then I'd say keep doing the P90X and cut back on your running.

I've seriously considered doing P90X... it looks fun. But I've known that right now, my goals are long distance triathlon and running, and so I just know I wouldn't have time for P90X. But maybe someday my goals will change, and I will definitely look at P90X or possibly programs like CrossFit if/when my goals change.

Good luck!

I'm doing the P90X workout but trying to keep my running plan. My running goal is to run a respectable 4.5 miles (shooting for 30 minutes). I'm finding I can't really do the P90X workout as directed (the P90X work-out schedule is 6 days a week) so I'm doing the P90X workouts based on how I feel on the days I rest from running. I did the P90X workout for 2 straight weeks and I noticed improved balance, strength, and stamina so I know it works...but when I introduced running I just couldn't recover quickly enough. Has anyone done the P90X work out and kept their running training going? I'm thinking it's not a good idea (at least for me). Thoughts?
