  1. I'm having a tough time going outside when the weather is bad.

  2. I am trying to walk fast (versus running), but my challenge is that my shins are holding me back.

How do I both strengthen and stretch them?

  3. Summer running - pollen, sunlight, heat . . . yuck! Give me a dark winter's morning, a howling gale blowing the sleet into my face, and ice underfoot any day!

There's no such thing as bad weather - just the wrong clothes ;-)

  4. There is an exercise that was prescribed for me in PT using a band for resistance. Basically you attach a band to your toes, the other end is attached to a stationary object. Flex the toes up towards your body against the resistance. This strengthens the anterior tibialis (muscles that runs along the shin bone).

Standing calf raises or seated calf raises work the back of the calves.

  5. For shins, try walking backwards. We used to always do this when I ran hurdles in high school, which is really hard on the shins. It seemed to help a lot. And if you REALLY want a workout, walk backwards up a hill. It's amazing how much those quad burn.

  6. Kim - this isn't some trick that Zappoman put you up to to get me injured is it? Have the old guy try to walk backwards up a hill, fall and hurt himself so he can't walk fast.

Still, I'm ready to try anything...

  7. Phil - Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean that Zappoman is not out to get you. :-)
