I usually have oatmeal, a bagel or toast. I want something that has carbohydrates, not too heavy.

What to you eat before a long run?

I'd like to say porridge, but this is just too heavy anything closer than 90 minutes before a run. So I end up loading up on junk cereal - something like Rice Crispies with sugar. Anything more is just too much for me.
It tends to burn pretty quick, so I also take along some extra fuel - cereal bars or dried apricots.

I'm new to this "long run thing" but what has been working for me is a banana and 1oz of Jeff's "Hammer Gel".

This morning I ate my standard breakfast: egg sandwich with Chicken (or turkey) on a bagel, and coffee. I ate this about 45 minutes before the run. I also ate some Clif "blocks" half way through the run.
Then a huge lunch afterwards.

I'm thinking the oatmeal was too heavy. I didn't feel that great on the run. I think I'll try toast next week.

I had 3/4 a banana before my run today. When I got back I had eggs, toast and coffee.

My sense is that everyone is a little different, but we all need to take into account the same basic factors.
1) How much fuel do you need for the work effort you're going to do? The answer will be specific to you, but the question will be the same for all of us.
2) How much time does your body need to digest that particular food you've chosen for your fuel? Again, each person and each food will be different. Maybe some of us can eat 10 minutes before a run and be fine... especially if it's a banana and a gel... but some fuels (like oatmeal or a sandwich will take more time to digest... 45 minutes to 3 hours...)
The best advice is to experiment during training and pick the best solution about 1/2 way through your training... then stick with it for race day.
