Two half-marathons a week apart?...

(7 posts)

  1. I would just like some feedback on this:

Beth and I are *thinking* about doing the Seattle Half-Marathon which is a week before the Las Vegas Half-Marathon. Are we crazy? Or for two people getting into running long distances is this a poor choice?

  2. I think that you're asking a lot of your body to do two races in back to back weeks.

I wouldn't even attempt to run a half the week before a marathon... and you could think of that as a "half effort" a week before a full effort.

I am really glad you'd having lots of fun and pushing yourself to new limits... but you can run for the rest of your life... what's the hurry to do it all in the first 6 months.

Now, maybe if you felt like you wanted to WALK the Seattle half marathon, then I could maybe see that being a reasonable thing to do, but still... as I keep saying to Phil, walking 13.1 miles is still a lot of work.

  3. I agree with Brad. I wouldn't recommend running both races. Racing is different than training. It's hard not to get excited and push yourself too hard. I think it's too much.

  4. It looks like a tall order to me. But the thing is, how far are you going on your long runs? If you're getting up toward the 13 miles without any problems, then you could (THEORETICALLY) just view the Seattle event as another training session, that you're just going to take at a nice, easy pace.

There are probably two problems with this:

    1. With only a week to go before Las Vegas, you should maybe be tapering, and NOT doing a 13 mile training run anyway.
    2. You can set out to take the Seattle race at a nice, easy pace . . . and then find yourself going all out, caught up in the madness of race day. Sure, you might finish the race far faster than you'd have thought possible . . . but end up completely knackered (sorry - bad term to use for a horse person) for the following weekend and beyond.

So I would agree with Lisa & Brad - think more than twice about this one.

Of course, you /could/ run the Seattle race, and then walk Las Vegas *really slowly* - I hear that Phil might need some company! ;-)

  5. I think that does it for me! I'm gonna skip the Seattle half-marathon.

  6. Now, if I could only convince you that it's ok to walk for short sections of the run.

Does it help to know that the winner of this weekend's Ironman World Championship took walk breaks as he went through the aid stations?

Are you going to say that I didn't qualify for Boston if I take walk breaks through the aid stations on my Marathon run?

  7. Ha! I think someone (Jeff) told you that Beth and I had discussed walk breaks on our run this Sunday. That probably warrants a completely separate thread... :-)
