Mindless Eating.

(8 posts)

  1. A post by Kate just reminded me of a book that I just read called, "Mindless Eating." If you have any interest in discovering why we eat foods we don't want to, or why we eat way too much at times, this book is a very fascinating read.

It has some practical ideas like replacing your dinner plates with smaller plates. Put your large glasses up and get smaller ones. And it discusses the ideas of eating scripts, which makes you think about ways that you might be able to change your eating scripts.

I'm trying to figure out how to change my Mt. Dew and boredom script. I hate to say it, but I believe on a subconcious level I've bought into their marketing. I have been able to kick alcohol and Starbucks, but Mt. Dew has been tough.

Maybe if any of you read the book, you could share some script-changing thoughts.

I originally heard about this book from Ironclm, it just took me some time to read it myself. Her review is really good: Ironclm's Review

  4. Yup, my local library system has a gazillion copies of it. Most of them checked out! ;-) I just placed a hold request for it.

  5. Thanks for the post Gary. I'll look for this book. I find myself buying Starbucks out of habit.

I never used to eat while watching TV. Now I've gotten into that habit. Not good...

  6. the worst is when you take a bag or box and eat right out of it. i've heard it said that when you do this, the only built in stopping point is the bottom of the bag/box. setting limits for yourself every time you eat is better than providing yourself with more than you need, and either feeling the compulsion to eat it or not providing parameters to keep yourself from that mindless eating...

  7. Excellent point Jen (is that your name?)...

I've heard this advice before... it's really important to put your food into a container that allows you to see all of the food.

Of course, this cuts both ways... because thanks to the mega-portions US restaurant culture, we've been trained into thinking that healthy portions take up an 18" plate... when in fact, those portions tend to be about 3-5x more food than we should in a single sitting.

In my new effort (as in starting today) to eat 100 calorie portions once every hour, I've been reminded how little 100 calories of some foods really are. For example, 100 calories of pecans (or any nuts for that matter) is really quite a small portion, far less than an handful. But then you have something like an apple or banana, which nature has made into a perfect single serving helping. (One small 6-7" banana = 100 cals, one medium apple = 100 cals.)

  8. I am indebted to garyd for the recommendation of this book. It's wonderful and funny too. Everyone who sees the book title is immediately very interested.
