My past 2 runs I've had a painful stitch in my side (under my ribs) as soon as I start to run.
My runs the last couple weeks have been great and this only started yesterday.
What can explain this??

you should go to the doctor and get that check out, sounds kinda like you strained a muscle but to be honest the best thing you can do is get it check out by a doctor, take it easy next couple of days you don't want to make it worse. Lots of rest and eat well, Hope it gets better...
good luck
i disagree about the doctor . . . it's just a couple of runs. stretch out the cramp, it's just a muscle that's either oxygen-starved or being plain silly to you. when i get stitches, i stretch them out without breaking stride. to stretch them, i link my hands overhead and lean my torso to the side opposite the stitch; it's like an oblique muscle stretch because that's where the muscle is located!
and honestly, who strains a muscle there? stretchy-stretch! and eat a banana a day!
I suggest drinking more water. I've found that dehydration causes side stitches more often than not.
I have had a similar issue lately. I thought it was side stitches, but have started to think that I pulled a muscle.... I know, who pulls a muscle there, right?
Anyway, if that is the case, I may have done it BY stretching through a cramp. It was during a race... all of my ab muscles cramped up, the whole front. I did something similar to the stretch tje210 mentioned, and now on the side I leaned away from I have had pain when I run for the past 1.5 weeks. So, stretching it might not be the best idea, I don't know. Standing up straight and belly breathing are definitely things to try, though, and hydration is always good!
My issue is improving as I rest and XT, which by the way it doesn't hurt during any other exercise. So, I guess I'd give it some time, and if nothing improves, take rosaljrmav's advice.
Hydration or lack of oxygen is the most likely cause.
Research hydration for runners. There is alot out there on it.
Belly breathing can really help if it is lack of oxygen to the muscle.
As far as a supplement that could help - a good omega 3 fish oil is supposed to help circulation providing more blood to the muscles.
Good Running!
i have had a similar stitch occur for nearly every jog of my life! I remember getting similar pains in high school, and years later they still occur after months of jogging every day. The doctor verified that nothing was wrong, but i am very unsure how to treat the pain besides stopping for a minute and/or keeping my abs extremely tight while jogging and jogging through the pain (which i don't suggest at all).I have a feeling water intake (or lack thereof) might be my problem.
Good luck! Keep up the excellent training and let me know if you find something that works.
