  1. Hi there, looking for a new road bike for my first triathlon.

Someone recommended the Giant OCR 3W to me. Do you have any other recommendations for first-timers... but also something I could use into the future.

  2. I have a Giant SCR Ltd, which I can highly recommend - it's only an aluminium frame with Shimano Sora components, but very adaptable & nimble. The only downside is that the frame's a little stiff & skittish in high speed / hard breaking corners - my next bike'll be carbon.

  3. I ride a specialized allez that I bought used off of craigslist. I love this bike and I only spent 600 on it. I would recommend to find a good used one. Good luck.

  4. that giant bike has a compact geometry frame, which some people fit well, but not everybody.

your $650 might go furthest with a used bike. Downside is you might look for a while before you find the right size plus the frame geometry that fits you.

if you buy used, consider taking it to a friendly local bike shop that can evaluate fit for you (assuming you are a beginner) and tell you how much more you will need to spend on different stem/seat/risers/whatever to get the bike to fit you. bike fit is somewhat subjective and no 2 people do it exactly the same, but a local bike shop can help a lot.

if you know a little about fit, it can help you discuss it intelligently with your LBS, whether in discussing the fit of a new bike or a used one.

  8. I think there's no reason to go out an buy a new bike just to do your first sprint-triathlon. Unless of course, you're looking for an excuse to buy a new bike! :)

When you get to T1 of your first triathlon, you'll see a ton of different bikes in all shapes and sizes...

Just go out and have fun!

  9. Susan, definitely get the bike sized for your body at your local bike shop. They'll be able to tell you if it's too big for you, or, if it's the right frame size, set it up to fit your measurements correctly.

NicoleAndMary, I have a 2006 Giant OCR3W and I love it to bits. Since I'm more into personal fitness and endurance riding, the entry level version of the OCR is perfect for me - and really, it's still light as a feather.
