So I just started running today...walked a mile and then gingerly ran/walked another two miles on a treadmill. I had to walk a few times because I was feeling a little pain in both knees...one below the kneecap, the other off to the right on the outside of the kneecap. I also had a little discomfort in my right foot.
After running, I found it hard to go DOWN stairs...irritation in the knee.
Any thoughts on this? Is there some stretching and/or exercises any of you would recommend to perhaps ward off knee pain and possible injury?

i'm not expert, nor have i ever had it, but the one off to the right of the knee sounds like IT band maybe. google some stretches for that. dont know about the other one.
you taking a joint supplement? i swear by triple strength Flex-A-Min with Bone Shield (which is just added calcium). swear by it for more reasons than i can put down here. it's cheap, about 16 bucks for 2 months' supply, and it ROCKS. i call it a must for ANY runner.

From my experience with knee injuries and running, I would first ask if you are doing any weight training for your legs? I have had some serious knee issues over the past year, similar to your location of pain, and was stopped from running for 6-8 months because of them.
Over the past several weeks I've taken to more weight training after a good deal of resting (ie doing light cardio) from my knee issues. This weight training for my legs has made a world of difference and for the first time in over 2 years I am running without any knee pain.
My suggestion would be to walk, stretch, don't run for a little while and take a few weeks to strengthen your legs. Then try to run a short easy run and see how they feel. You don't want to push it on bad knees, it only gets worse.
Also check out Lacey's blog (http://lacey.sweat365.com/) She had to go through 6-8 weeks of Physical Therapy for her knee issues and posted all of the exercises on her blog. They were great motivation for me to stop running, stretch more and do weight training for my legs.

I'll look into the joint supplement...thanks!
As for the strength training...I did just that today...legs...to support the knee. I did a little bike cardio this A.M and followed it with the training...so we'll see if that starts to do the trip. Thanks for the tidbit on Lacey's blog...will check it out.
