Ankle Clicking

  1. Over the past few years I have been experiencing ankle clicking (rt. ankle) while running, specifically during the push off phase of my stride. Over the past few months it has increased in frequency (every step) and has gotten louder. It's so loud that my running buddies can hear me coming from behind! I can feel the click as I push off, too. It's not painful while I run, it just feels a little sticky...not smooth.

It didn't bother me at all at first, but now I am starting to have some soreness in the ankle after I run, and at random times when I am not being active.

I did some internet research and it seems like this sometimes happens to people who have had a strain or sprain to the peroneal ligament of the ankle and it causes peroneal dislocation which can cause clicking. However, I have never had an ankle sprain or strain, and my noise and pain is more medial than the peroneal ligament. It is medial to my lateral malleolus, around in the space above my talus.

    Any ideas???

  3. I have the identical thing, when I was training for my first marathon I thought I better go get it checked out even though it rarely bothered me. I had an Xray and MRI, it showed I have an "extra - long Muscle" that wraps around the ankle, and the clicking is it moving over and back. It only hurts when it gets stuck and I have to get on my tippy toes to get it back. You may have something totally different but it sure sound the same. Of course if it really gets sore go to the doctor.

  4. I have the same thing, and have done for about 20 years. It started when I was in my teens and used to skate a lot, and I can now make it click pretty much at will just by extending and twisting my foot - just like a push-off motion on ice. So I think I know the cause of mine.

Never got as far as getting it checked out by a doctor, and seeing as I don't do ultra marathons (or anything in that kind of league, like, say, a 30k race on Saturday, followed by a marathon on Sunday), definitely haven't had any X-rays. I figure that it doesn't hurt, so I'll leave it alone!
