  1. I posted this here and on my workout blog because I was really hoping for some words of encouragement.

I am returning to running after some time away. I used to be o.k. and at least in the medals for my age group. I could run a 7:30 minute pace.

Well, I had my first “race” since last April. It was 5 miles around a beautiful mountain lake. I’ve been doing distance but no “speed work”. I’ve been doing intervals uphill on the treadmill. I’ve been weight training. I guess it just wasn’t enough. My time was 46:06. Oh, and to top it off the trail wasn’t marked very well, and quite a few of us went off course. The course was up hill for the first half. I didn’t think it was that steep, but by the second half it was kicking my butt. I stopped twice at the top of hills to catch my breath, and once when we had to turn around because we were off course. There was a woman I passed at the very begining of the race. I never saw her the whole race. There was no one behind me for a long time, and when we got back on course she was in front of me. I couldn’t believe it. So all in all I was disappointed in myself and in the run. So, next week it’s off to the track and into the hills. Maybe I’ll be faster next time

  2. You really shouldn't be so hard on yourself. It was just one race and it doesn't say anything about your next one. In fact you will probably just keep on improving and getting faster. Be good to your body, give it some credit and begin focusing your training on the areas where you want to improve. Lace up the shoes and smile!!

  3. I agree. Don't be so hard on yourself. Give your self credit for what you did acheive and set your sights on the next race.

  4. Hi, Well, I am new to this site, and I know what you mean about the words of encouragement! They mean A LOT when you are in training! Don't be so hard on yourself. This is also your first race in awhile, so put it behind you and look forward... to the next one. You will do great!! :-)

  5. yep. don't be hard on yourself. it's been a long time for you. and don't hit the track. you need to build up your base so that you have some endurance to hone when you eventually get to the track. track workouts won't take you from 9:00 splits down to 7:30's right now. your main mistake going into that event was probably thinking that treadmill workouts were any kind of race preparation :-P what's keeping you inside?

  6. Thanks everyone. tje210, I have been running outside and running 20 miles a week 4,6,4,6 and on the inbetween days I was doing intervals on the treadmill uphill since I don't have any good hills close by. I started doing that around March. I wasn't doing any track work because I was just trying to get my distance in. I think I have a pretty good base now, so I think it's time to kick it up a notch.

  7. Mickie, it could also be that you just didn't have a good day. Sometimes that happens.

Anyway, I think adding speed is a good idea for anyone... You know the old saying....

The only way to run faster, is to run faster.
