New athlete seeking help

(2 posts)

  1. Hello, I am new to the running / triathlon world. I have been training for a half marathon which I completed on July fourth in Portland, OR. The Foot Traffic Flat for those interested. I ran it at 8:03 / mile. I am happy with this result, and hope to continue training for a Olympic Tri and a full marathon. When I started I weighed 197, and currently weigh 175, about 20 pounds lost! I am 5'11", so this is not bad, but I would like to loose more. I do not think that I am to heavy, but I fell that I have too much body fat. About 15% last I checked. For a while I was on a 2000 calorie limit diet, but soon felt like I was really dragging. It was hard for me to walk across campus some days, not good. I was afraid of injury, so I started eating more. Now I have been putting on pounds. Any advice out there to help? I know that it is Calories consumed vs. Calories burned, but there seems to be a very fine line with my body. Is it ok to feel really weak like that often?
Also, any advice or tips for either a full marathon, or a triathlon are really appreciated. I am going in to this whole thing pretty blind. Thanks in advance.

  2. I would just think about the calories that you eat. I think 2000 calories is enough but if you eat more useful calories, that might help you.

As far as triathlon help, I am fairly new too. A couple of months ago I ran my first sprint. I have an olympic length in september. I know that for me motivation is tough when the goal is so far off so all I can encourage you to do is stick with it. The hard work will pay off.
