Glucosamine/Chrondroitin

  1. Does anyone take this for joint health or to help with joint pain?

I read a few articles, one of which in Runners World and I am debating on trying it out for a few months to see if it helps my left knee feel better. My mom takes it for joint pain and finds it helps her a lot, but like her I'd probably take the 1/2 dose, not the full dose because I don't think I'll need that much of it.

I've already been icing my knee after every workout, gotten new sneakers with cushioning and strength train/yoga to keep it functioning well. It's an old soccer injury that lurks and seems to return when I'm running.

Thanks for your input. I'm probably going to try it regardless, but I'm interested to hear if anyone takes it currently.

  3. Yes, and it works. And from what I hear more and more doctors are recommending it to their patients. Keeps the joints lubricated.

  4. I've heard it increases your cholesterol. Is that true? I used to take it, but stopped a few years ago after a cholesterol check. At the time my cholesterol was unusually high. My blood work is now back to normal. Just a coincidence? I don't know, but my new rule is to minimize the non-food supplements that I take (I do take fish oil and B-complex though).

  5. I love it! I started taking it when I was having trouble with a sore knee a couple of months ago and it really helped! I continue to take it.

  6. Here's some feedback from an RN and a DVM:

Glucosamine was originally used to help Grey hounds and other racing dogs. Veterinarians (DVM) did a lot of research on this, and found through many many clinical studies that it REALLY worked to repair cartilage in these race dogs. We're talking about actual repair occurring in dogs who had had the cartilage in there legs surgically damaged as part of the research studies.

Humans aren't dogs... and no one has ever attempted these kinds of studies on human beings... but the studies are considered very compelling and are the basis of most reports for the efficacy if Glocosamine.

Chondrotine apparently has a little less support, and doctors seem to be more split on the value of it as a supplement.

MSM is another supplement commonly included in these formulations, and it has had even less research done on it.

As a runner... I've been using it off and on, and although it may be a placebo effect, I feel like it has made a difference for me.

  7. Wow, thanks everyone. I am surprised by the overwhelming response being positive for using this. I usually avoid anything that's not real food, although I am now taking a few supplements (fish oil, CLA and multivitamin <-always took that). So, I think I will give it a try. Even if it has a placebo effect, as long as my knee feels better and no pain - I'm all for it.

I will probably try the brand/kind my mom has used. I was also surprised to find a somewhat positive review on Runner's World of the supplement as well and on various other sites regarding studies done on Navy SEALS.

Again, thanks for your feedback, it is greatly appreciated!

  8. Just wanted to post an update: I've started taking the supplement and after 4 days I'm noticing a difference. Placebo or not, it feels good and whatever makes running pain-free is what makes me happy! :)

    Thanks again for your feedback!
