  1. I'm thinking about doing the half-marathon in Vegas. Any advice for a guy that has a borderline gambling problem and is working on kicking a drinking habit?

Also, some training advice would be helpful too.

  2. Bring someone who will keep you accountable and encourage you to stay focus. Or,if you do not think you are strong enough don't sign up. I am sure you can find other marathons to accomplich your personal fitness goals. Put it this way, whether you go or not, your problem will be always with you unless you take the necessary steps to overcome it.
As far as training advice, go on line and type in half marathon training. You will be able to choose the training plan which fits you best.

  3. If you can find others who are NOT into gambling or drinking, but ARE into running to hang out with. I'll be there running the full marathon. Roy and I rarely gamble and don't drink (for us, gambling is trying that green thing at the buffet). There will be other marathon maniacs there as well. I'd suggest finding a running email list with marathoners/half marathoners and making some friends. Find out if there will be meetups (there always are) and focus on meeting new people, running a race, and meeting your goal of not only completing the half, but of coming home free of guilt.

Running is a fantastic way to acquire the focus you need to help you kick these issues. You might see if there is a training group around you (not sure where you are) that is training for a marathon/half around that time. I'm training people for Seattle, for example, but also taking some of them up to Portland and one to Disneyworld, so I'm tweaking their training to meet those earlier/later goals. Good programs will help you do that and a group make it more fun, holds you accountable, and you can learn SO much from others on the runs.
