What Should I Wear?

by Lisa Sabin, December 30, 2007

Cold weather running
The goal is to stay warm enough and to wick perspiration from your skin, to prevent a chilly or clammy feeling. You also need protection from rain and wind.

Hat with a visor
A hat with a visor protects you from the rain and snow. It’s also helpful on bright winter days.

Long-sleeve shirt
You’ll want to keep warm and wick moisture away. Technical shirts keep you comfortable.

Shorts
Nylon or technical fabric running shorts are fine for cool sunny days.

Running tights
Tights provide extra warmth on cold or rainy days.

Jackets
A jacket made of a polyester blend, keeps you warm and keeps the wind and rain off. This is essential for cold, windy or rainy days

Gloves
Hands need extra protection, experiment with lightweight breathable fabrics

Warm weather running
The goal is to stay as cool as possible. Light loose clothing will help.

Hat with a visor
A hat with a visor keeps the sun out of your eyes and protects your face from the sun.

Short-sleeve shirt
You’ll want minimum upper body coverage. A short-sleeve shirt made of technical fabric keeps you cooler than no shirt. Women may want to wear as little as a jog bra.

Shorts
Nylon or technical fabric

Sunglasses
Sunglasses protect you from the sun and keep you from squinting. They are great for sunny days and bright winter days.

Sunblock
Use SPF 30 or higher to protect yourself against sunburn and reduce your risk of skin cancer.

Chaffing
Chaffing can be prevented by applying body glide or vaseline to areas that tend rub against fabric.
